Garden Bedroom +1

Now that the gf has moved in (I know, how very cliche of us) I’m having to make some changes to my beloved Garden Party Bedroom. Let’s recap, shall we?

As much as I thought the room was ‘done’ and ‘fantastic’ it seems that my mid-century loving, prefers-to-sleep-in-a-cave ladyfriend doesn’t like the whole tea at three approach to decorating.

So we redecorate*.

The whole thing started with a pack of playing cards from 1962 I found at a local market that I’m just madly, madly in love with. I’m in the process of blowing up the King & Queens of Hearts for above the bed. The Samantha Hahn will go near the desk. Maybe I’ll mix up the mod color scheme with some very-right-now DIY ombre curtains, a few embroidered pillows and my already owned inky blue bedding & orange glass lamps. The whole thing will be finished off with an overdyed magenta rug, because this is yet another trend I just can’t sit on the sidelines on. I’m still trying to convince a certain someone that we need a coat of green-y yellow-y mod paint to finish the whole thing off.

The only thing we need now is a headboard.  I was going to go with a custom ikat number with an amazing Donghia print, but I just don’t think it works at this point.

Is purple just totally out of nowhere?

This shape is perfection, but gray? Meh.

Is it just blue to match the bedding?

Maybe a pop of bright red is just what the space needs against the sea of blue bedding?

So what do you think?

(*Recently we had the pleasure of a healing consultation (yes, we’re new age-y like that) of our home. The lovely intuitive said that while the energy of the rest of our home was great, the bedroom was fraught with stress and bad ju-ju. Thankfully her prescription was a new comfy headboard, a rug and some new, darker curtains. She says that curtains are the eyelids of the room, windows the eyes. Take care to have your windows clean and your window treatments neat. Got it.)

Baby H

One of the most things I’ve worked on lately is the nursery for my sister’s soon-to-arrive little one. She’s a total no nonsense gal, and wanted something neutral, unfussy, and globally inspired. I wanted to use pieces that she could incorporate into her home naturally as the baby grew up- i.e. no ‘baby furniture’ for this room.

We started here:

(Society 6 print ‘Flight of the Elephants’)

To give the illusion of height I insisted the curtains be hung ‘high & wide’. It helps mask the room’s tiny windows and give a more finished look. We repurposed pieces of furniture already in the family with fresh coats of shiny mustard yellow and new knobs.

My sister insisted on a rocker that she could sleep in for late nights and sick days, but finding one that fit her 6’2″ frame was no easy task. We went custom and covered it in this stain friendly Suzani inspired print which works perfectly with her existing living room furniture so she has lots of options down the road.

Isn’t that rug killer? Home Goods, they do good work. It’s perfect for messes and ties together the browns, grays, and mustards that we wanted for the room.

Things I Design

I’ve been having a lot of fun designing my house/a new client project/my sister’s baby shower/my sister’s nursery lately. Need help your your space or event, just holler… info{at}sitenyc{dot}com.

The client’s bar light got installed. I LOVE it:

My sister wanted a relaxed, grown up feeling shower:

We put the finishing touches on my sister’s nursery as well:

Of course, I get jealous (stupid Scorpio tendencies) when everyone else gets something new, so I’m having this bad boy done for my big LR redo:

*humble apologies for the not-so-awesome quality of these iPhone photos, but hey. Better something than nothing.

New Living Room, Part II

Remember once upon a time when I was going to redo my living room? Like two years ago? Well, since then I’ve moved, met the love of my life, and adopted two kitties. All those changes added up to me nothing doing a goddamn thing about my new living room…until now.

Next month the gf will be moving into my place and I’m finally ready to pull the trigger on reupholstering my sofa/mid-century chair and changing out some of my house basics. I’m so ready that two giant bolts of fabric are actually hanging out in the living room, waiting for the upholster to finally call me back. Wanna see what we picked?

The girlfriend and both fell in love with the mustard meets olive cotton velvet from Zarin Fabrics. The punchy aqua floral took some convincing; the gf wasn’t feeling it. I’m still looking for the perfect geometric rug to round out the room, but so far this red & orange number has my attention. Over the dining room table I’d love to see a row of paper cut mobiles instead of a more traditional light fixture. All of these picks can be seen on my Pinterest board dedicated to all things new apartment.
